Calcite rhombohedron ‣ optical calcite with birefringence and polarisation of light → is only given with clear crystals | Icelandic specimen ‣ researchers unravel Viking sunstone for navigation → also possible with opaque crystals. The crystals are naturally brittle, partly sharp-edged with conchoidal fracture
Calcite instead of compass | Researchers unravel Viking sunstone for navigation → Icelandic calcites have the property of breaking a single ray of light into two separate rays, creating a doubling effect. If you place this on a piece of paper with writing on it and look through it, the writing appears doubled and shifted in relation to each other. The light rays reflected by the paper are divided on the crystal surface and thus simulate two images. The result is a double image. Turn the calcite and look at the writing from a certain angle to see the double refraction.
Researchers are convinced that the Vikings used calcite crystals to navigate their ships through the seas with precision. Calcite refracts sunlight depending on its current position relative to the sun. By turning the stone, a position can be reached in which the intensity of both light beams is identical. At this moment, the crystal shows exactly the direction of the sun. Even when the sun is covered by clouds or even when there is little sunlight, it is possible to determine the position of the sun with the help of the transparent stone.
